EXHIBITION AND TALK

Delighted to present 11 pieces including both Archibald finalist paintings at The Royal Automobile Club of Australia during July and August 2022.

JOINT SHOWS

TWO VIEWS – my joint show with Julian (Jolly) Day took place in April 2021 at Studio W in Woolloomooloo. Counterparts, my show with Claire Cavanna was held at Room 205 in Darlinghurst in December 2019.

SOLO AT HAZELHURST 

My first solo at a Regional Gallery was a great way to start 2019. Many thanks to those who saw the show and others who came to the opening and special night event.

TWO SOLO and THREE GROUP SHOWS 

My first solo in over two years ‘Every last drop’ opened in May 2018 at One88 Gallery in Katoomba quickly followed by ‘Inside Out’ at Disorder Gallery in Sydney’s Darlinghurst. A superb portraiture group show ‘About Face’ was curated by Amber Creswell Bell at Sheffer Gallery in Darlington, Sydney and the group show ‘Love Letter: I do’ opened at 541 ArtSpace in the heart of the City and was curated by Yves Lee, closing in late July 2018. Love Letter: REPRESENTED, the Group Show with six other artists closed in late November 2018.

2017 Salon des Refusés at SH Ervin Gallery

This portrait of fellow artist Marc Etherington (#hugeskull) was selected for the Archibald Salon des Refusés at the SH Ervin Gallery in Sydney – the first time I have exhibited at this historic gallery with some of Australia’s best portrait and landscape artists. Later it was also a finalist in the Percival Portrait Prize in Townsville and a semi-finalist in the Moran Prize.

Multi-Finalist – ‘Not now Dad, I’m busy.’

This portrait of my son Max (below) was a finalist in the Lethbridge Gallery in Brisbane, the Northern Beaches Art Prize in Sydney and was a semi-finalist in the 2017 Doug Moran National Portrait Prize. It was on display at Lismore Regional Gallery as a finalist in the Hurford Hardwood Portrait Prize closing in September 2018.

2016 – more exhibitions and awards

Delighted to have been selected in six shows that opened towards the end of 2016 – at the Redland Art Award in Cleveland, Queensland; in EMSLA at the Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery, in the St. George Art Award in Hurstville, the Hall & Wilcox Exhibition and Art Award in Sydney, a group show in the Tortoiseshell Gallery in Elizabeth Bay and in the KAAF Art Award in the Sydney CBD.

Activities at the Hazelhurst Regional Gallery

Honoured to take part in a special artists’ talk as part of the Moran Portrait Prize special event in late May at Hazelhurst. I shared the floor with Archibald Prize winner Euan Macleod, fellow Moran Prize finalist Mertim Gokalp and photographer Paul Wheeler.

Delighted to be a finalist in this prestigious award for the second time. Really enjoyed visiting the Perc Tucker in Townsville – one of the most well attended Regional Galleries in Australia. A super hang with my piece in a great position… many thanks to the Director, all his staff and volunteers.

KAAF Finalist 2019-2015 

Including esteemed judges including John McDonald, Art Critic for the Sydney Morning Herald and Colin Rhodes, ex-Dean of the Sydney College of the Arts, I’m delighted to have made the finals of the Korea-Australia Art Foundation [KAAF] Art Prize five years in a row.

Moran Prize 2015 Finalist

Honoured to be included amongst the 30 finalists in the 2015 Doug Moran National Portrait Prize. One of only three artists to be an Archibald finalist in the same year! The painting is entitled ‘Portrait of the Artist’s Son, Max’. This award is Australia’s most valuable painting prize and my work has been nominated for the semi-finals seven times.

SOLO SHOW: Hazelhurst Arts Centre, Broadhurst Gallery

Honoured to have my first solo in a Regional Gallery.  It featured 33 paintings, 12 drawings and a video – and comprised a survey of portraiture practice from 2012 – 2018.

First ‘exclusively portraits’ show in Sydney

Delighted to have been allocated the beautiful Cooper Rooms at Juniper Hall as part of the group show ‘Four Finalists’ of the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize. The show featured the ‘After Retinal Detachment’ portrait series plus some brand new portraits and supporting sketches. The collection included work that’s appeared in the country’s most prestigious art awards including the Archibald Prize and the Black Swan Prize plus the Mosman Art Prize, the Percival Portrait Prize, Hazelhurst’s Art on Paper award and others.

Archibald Prize 2015 Finalist

Excited and delighted that my portrait of Louise Voigt, CEO Barnardos Australia was a finalist in the Archibald Prize – the second time I was selected for Australia’s oldest portrait and most renowned prize.

Portraits at Stanley Street Gallery

This group show ran at Liza and Merilyn’s lovely venue in East Sydney. Delighted to have three works hung – including my 2013 Archibald self-portrait and a double portrait of retinal surgeons, the two Alex Hunyors and a study of my son, Max.

Nebulae at Project [504]

My joint exhibition with sculptor Lee Blattmann closed in August at Project [504] in St Leonards and was highlighted by the well attended special opening event with Prof. Fred Watson AM. The show included the largest Nebula paintings yet plus video works.

My portraits of Marc Etherington in his studio (2018), my son Max (Not now Dad, I’m busy, 2017), artist Giles Alexander (2015) another of my son Max (2015), astronomer Fred Watson (2014) artists Marcus Callum (2013) and Sarah Hendy (2013) made it into the semi-finals of the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize. Click here to see them!

2020, 2018, 2016 & 2014 Percival Portrait Painting Prize

Delighted to report that my works have been selected for the last four Glencore Percival Portrait Prize events in Townsville, North Queensland.

Nebula Evolution at Central Park in 2014

Some of my Nebula works were shown at Central Park (The Living Mall). The opening event was highlighted by star speaker Fred Watson AM, astronomer, broadcaster and promoter of space science. He also unveiled the portrait ‘The Astronomical Fred Watson” – its first public appearance! See the video here on YouTube or click here to see his portrait in detail.

Black Swan Prize for Portraiture 2014 & 2017 Finalist

My self-portrait ‘Guy Morgan with Peter Pan after retinal detachment’ and ‘Hanging in the Gallery’ were selected for the Black Swan Prize (now Lester Prize) for Portraiture held in Perth.

First View in Melbourne

Having won the inaugural ‘Who is looking at you’ Portrait Prize with a study of Louise Voigt, I held my first Melbourne solo show at Cambridge Studio Gallery, Collingwood. Attendance was encouraging and great to meet many lovely people and to receive such positive feedback.

My large portrait of Professor Fred Watson In his element, astronomer Fred Watson AM‘ was a finalist in the 2014 ‘Open’ section of  Fisher’s Ghost Art Award and a semi-finalist in the 2014 Moran Portrait Prize.

2013 Fishers Ghost Award

My second painting of two eminent retinal surgeons (father & son) was a finalist in the contemporary section of the Fishers Ghost Art Award on show at the brilliant Campbelltown Arts Centre.

2013 Chippendale New World Art Prize Finalist

Happy to have been in the inaugural CNWAP with two works from the Nebula Evolution series displayed at Central Park Pavilion as part of the Chippendale Creative Precinct.

2013 Archibald Prize

Delighted and honoured to be included in the Archibald Prize exhibition. My self-portrait ‘Guy Morgan with Peter Pan after retinal detachment’ also went on tour, visiting eight regional galleries. It’s been on public display in NSW, Victoria, Queesnland and WA.

Charcoal study print now available

The charcoal study which was the basis of my Archibald entry (click here to see it) was hung in the 2013 Hazelhurst Art Award exhibition. It’s now available as a signed print on beautiful archival stock – the sheet size is 40cm x 29.5cm and perfect for framing. Click here to email me if you’re interested in securing one.

IEAA (Dubai) 2013 Shortlist

One of four Australian artists shortlisted in the International Emerging Artist Award 2013. Works from my Nebula series (paintings and videos) were selected by international judges, making the shortlist of 73 out of 1,476 entries from around the world.
